On 11th February, our Under-19 GLIS Football team achieved a remarkable victory by defeating Everest International Academy 3–2 in the semi-finals of the MISAA tournament. This win was not just a match result; it marked a powerful turnaround from an earlier 12–1 loss to the same team. Everest had finished the group stage ranked number one and was widely expected to win the entire competition. Our team’s comeback story is a clear example of how discipline, resilience, and hard work can change the course of any challenge.

The Challenge of Facing a Strong Opponent
At the start of the season, Everest International Academy was the dominant force in the tournament. Their 12–1 victory over GLIS in the group stage showed their strength and left many doubting our team’s chances. Facing such a strong opponent again in the semi-finals could have been intimidating. Instead, it became a source of motivation.
The players knew they had to improve every aspect of their game. They focused on:
Strengthening their defense to prevent conceding many goals
Improving teamwork and communication on the field
Building physical fitness and endurance
Developing strategies to counter Everest’s style of play
This preparation was not easy. It required long hours of training, reviewing past mistakes, and maintaining a positive mindset despite earlier setbacks.
Building Confidence Through Teamwork
One of the most important factors in the team’s success was their growing confidence as a unit. Over the season, the players learned to trust each other and work together seamlessly. This trust showed in their passing, positioning, and support during the game.
Coach Chris Matteo emphasized the importance of teamwork, saying that the players’ ability to function as a team was key to their victory. The players supported one another, both on and off the field, which helped them stay focused and motivated.
The Semi-Final Match: A Test of Willpower
The semi-final was a highly competitive match. GLIS entered as underdogs, but the earlier defeat only fueled their determination. The game was intense, with both teams fighting hard for every ball.
Key moments included:
Early goals from GLIS that set the pace and gave the team confidence
Strong defensive plays that stopped Everest’s attacks
Tactical substitutions that kept the team fresh and adaptable
The final goal that sealed the victory and sent the crowd into celebration
The players showed tenacity and willpower throughout the match. Their ability to stay calm under pressure and keep pushing forward made the difference.
Lessons Beyond the Pitch
The journey of the Under-19 Football team teaches valuable lessons that go beyond sports. The qualities displayed—discipline, resilience, teamwork, and perseverance—are essential in many areas of life.
For younger students considering competitive sports, this story shows that setbacks are not the end. Instead, they can be opportunities to learn and grow. The team’s experience highlights how:
Hard work can lead to improvement and success
Challenges can strengthen character
Working together achieves more than individual effort alone
Maintaining hope and determination is crucial in difficult times
These lessons apply in classrooms, relationships, and future careers. The team’s journey is a reminder that success often comes from facing difficulties head-on and refusing to give up.
Preparing for the Finals
With the semi-final victory, GLIS now advances to the finals of the MISAA tournament. The team is focused on continuing their hard work and representing the values they have built throughout the season.
Coach Matteo expressed pride in the players’ growth and dedication. He looks forward to seeing them bring the same energy and spirit to the final match.
