Our High School students recently took part in a three-day International Model United Nations (IMUN) conference held in Manila from 12 to 14 November 2025. This event brought together over 250 young delegates from across the globe to discuss urgent global challenges. The conference offered a unique chance for students to develop diplomacy and public speaking skills, engage in cultural exchange, and build meaningful connections. It was a truly inspiring experience that helped shape the leaders of tomorrow.

The Importance of Model United Nations for Students

Model United Nations conferences simulate the workings of the United Nations, allowing students to role-play as diplomats representing various countries. This hands-on experience teaches them about international relations, negotiation, and problem-solving. For high school students, participating in IMUN is more than just an academic exercise. It builds confidence, critical thinking, and leadership skills that are valuable in any career path.

At the Manila conference, committees such as UN Women, UNESCO, WHO, UNICEF, and UNFPA were represented. Each committee focused on specific global issues, from gender equality and education to health and population challenges. Our students prepared thoroughly to represent their assigned countries, researching policies and crafting resolutions to address these pressing topics.
Developing Diplomacy and Public Speaking Skills
One of the most valuable aspects of the IMUN conference was the opportunity for students to practice diplomacy and public speaking. Delegates had to present their country’s position clearly and persuasively, respond to questions, and negotiate with others to reach agreements. This environment pushed students out of their comfort zones and helped them improve their communication skills.

For example, a student representing a country in the WHO committee had to argue for increased funding for global vaccination programs. Through respectful debate and collaboration, delegates worked together to draft resolutions that balanced different interests. This process taught students how to listen actively, build consensus, and express ideas confidently.

Engaging in Meaningful Cultural Exchange
The conference was also a platform for cultural exchange. With delegates from various countries, students learned about different traditions, perspectives, and ways of thinking. This exposure broadened their understanding of the world and fostered empathy.
During breaks and social events, students shared stories about their home countries, food, and customs. These interactions helped break down stereotypes and build friendships across borders. Such connections are vital in today’s interconnected world, where cooperation is key to solving global problems.
Making a Positive Impact Through Global Initiatives
IMUN is not just a simulation; it connects young people to real-world issues and encourages them to think about solutions. The resolutions drafted during the conference reflected genuine concerns such as improving access to education, promoting gender equality, and addressing public health crises.
Our students left the conference inspired to continue learning and contributing to these causes. Some have already started community projects based on ideas discussed at IMUN, showing how the experience can lead to tangible positive change.
Building Lifelong Connections and Networks
Beyond skills and knowledge, the conference helped students build lasting relationships. Meeting peers who share a passion for global issues creates a supportive network that can last for years. These connections often lead to collaborations on projects, further learning opportunities, and even future career paths.
Students exchanged contact information and promised to stay in touch, sharing resources and ideas. This network of young leaders is a valuable asset as they move forward in their academic and professional journeys.
Preparing for the Future
Participation in events like the International Model United Nations prepares students for future challenges. It encourages them to think critically about complex problems, work with diverse groups, and communicate effectively. These skills are essential not only for careers in diplomacy or international relations but also in any field that requires teamwork and leadership.
Our students’ experience in Manila demonstrated their ability to engage thoughtfully with global issues and collaborate toward solutions. This foundation will serve them well as they continue their education and enter the workforce.
